Reader/Writers Applications E-Government Transport Access Control Banking Multi-Application / Loyalty Patents Access Control Access control is on the verge of becoming a very large segment of the contactless smart card market. There are a very large number of access control applications, each requiring usually a limited amount of cards, readers, and infrastructures. Two different kinds of access control exist: Physical: People access to certain areas at certain time Logical: Access rights to network, computer or platform Here are some examples of access control applications: US Department of Defense: 5 million corporate badges issued for identification, building access, and network access. Transportation Security Administration \'s (TSA): The Transportation Worker Identification Credential (TWIC) programs consist in developing tamper-resistant identification credentials with biometric information for the TSA employees. The TWIC is designed to secure the process of authenticating transportation employees who have unescorted access to secure locations within transportation facilities. When fully implemented by the TSA, the TWIC program may include six million credentials. Other airport access control: All Canadian airports restricted areas, the Hamburg international hub, and more. Millions of consumers are already paying for purchases using contactless payment systems. American Express (ExpressPay™), MasterCard (PayPass™), Diners, Visa, and Japanese JCB have introduced contactless payment solution based on the ISO/IEC 14443 standard and relying on the existing credit/debit card infrastructure to process contactless payment transactions. Consumers love the convenience and speed of paying with a contactless card. They do not need to carry cash, counting change, or worrying about whether they have enough cash for a purchase. According to Ariana Michele-Moore of the U.S.-based research firm Celent Communications, three market segments are particularly ripe for the introduction of contactless payment: fast food restaurants, movie theaters, and video stores. These segments generated 160 billion in sales in the United States in 2002, of which almost 95% were cash sales. According to Michele-Moore, by 2007 contactless devices will account for 8% of the market represented by these three segments. According to the Smart Card Alliance , the current contactless payment pilot programs are demonstrating that payments using contactless smart cards brings real benefits to both consumers and merchants The consumer benefits are: Faster check-out times Easier to use: no signature necessary, no PIN to remember, no need to carry or check for correct change Choice of form factors (card, key chain attachment, mobile phone, etc.) More purchasing ability and no limitation of available cash Possibility to pay for low-value transactions using a credit card, and consequently, to track for low-value transactions Improved security: the card remain in the consumer’ control throughout the transaction, so the card information are not disclosed to the retailer The merchant benefits are: Faster throughput, speeding consumers through the checkout process Increased revenue from increased consumer spending Improved operational efficiency--less cash handling and reduced pilferage, fewer personnel on site, improved payment terminal reliability Increased customer satisfaction--more efficient purchases Improved information about customers Potential to co-brand payment devices Opportunities for competitive differentiation Privacy Policy Terms Of Use Home About Us Solutions Partners News Contact Us Copyright 2005/ Tandis Incrporated",16);arrFiles[2]=new Array(3,"applications-egov.htm","2005-03-16","Tandis Incorporated","","","Subscribe To Our Newsletter Contactless Standards Card Formats Assembly Lines Reader/Writers Applications E-Government Transport Access Control Banking Multi-Application / Loyalty Patents E-Government Contactless technology is seen as key to securing visas and passports in countries around the globe. On circuit boards, the heat sink assembly usually consists of a flat metal body (in aluminum or copper) protruding up from the board, often bonded to a metal fin structure that reduces the thermal resistance to air. Depending of the size, shape, and material, the heat sink design absorbs and dissipates at various level of performance the excess heat generated by a system. Copper is far more efficient than Aluminum for absorbing the heat. It is also far more expensive. Today’s semiconductors are so fast that it becomes more and more complex to design heat sink that can efficiently absorb and dissipate the heat they generate. Most PC manufacturers have to move from aluminum to copper, which results in significant increase in costs. Tandis has invented and patented a new heat sink technology called “accordion fin.” It consists of folding very thin sheets of aluminum or copper metals in the shape of an accordion fin. The purpose is to maximize the surface area in contact with the air flow. It has also the advantage of minimizing the use of metal, consequently dramatically reducing the cost of the heat sink. Thanks to this new technology, all aluminum and copper heat sinks become more efficient (more surface area to absorb and dissipate the heat) and less expensive (less metal used). The manufacturing of such accordion fin heat sink is easy, fully customizable, and highly automated for any size, shape, and material. The folded fins can be attached to a base of copper or aluminum of varying thickness, to meet your performance and weight requirements. The fins are attached to the base using either a high performance thermal compound or solder. Products applications include PCs, motor controller, automotive heating and air-conditioning. They allows for flexibility and growth. The Tandis TS-1600 Assembly Line The new Tandis TS-1600 has abandoned the workcell design for a conveyor-based fully automated production line. The TS-1600 can produce more than 1,600 cards per hour on eight workstations build around a conveyor system. The workstations and conveyor are controlled by a standard PC running Tandis’ custom software. The machine contains two pick and place workstations, four wire embedder workstations, and two welder workstations. There are many localized I/O control modules throughout the machine to decentralize the controls greatly reducing the wiring. The conveyor and frame are built from Bosch components. The conveyor uses anti-static belts, customized pallets, and lift to move the sheets from station to station and position them for operation. The pallets move in a smooth manner with soft stops and cushions to prevent jamming. Each pallet contains a precision polished granite surface on an antistatic Bosch pallet frame. It provides an excellent embedding surface that is non-metallic for testing on pallet and includes integrated vacuum manifold, precision sheet locating pins, and RFID tags. At the beginning of the assembly line a sheet loader takes a blank sheet from the supply drawer and loads it onto a pallet. The drawer has a capacity of four hors of production. The sheet feeder features automatic sensing of the sheet format. The next process consists of lifting the pallet off the conveyor it and positioning it. It accurately locates the pallet every time. It features vacuum ports to interface with the pallet and air cushions for gentle operations. The three following processes are the most important phases of inlay (or inlet) manufacturing: Punch, pick and place Wire embedding Micro welding The process ends with the sheet unloader that takes a finish sheet from the pallet and places it into the product drawer. This conveyor system has three main advantages over the previous workcell design: The conveyor system takes less space The conveyor system allows components to be shared, reducing cost The conveyor system eliminates sheet feeding at every workcell, greatly increasing throughput and dramatically increasing quality yields, by eliminating defects created by handling sheets between work cells. Here are some examples of RFID packaging: Plastic cards Plastic housing Disks and coins Glass housing Dedicated formats for tools and bottle identification Keys and key fobs Mobile phones and watches The newest and hottest format is called “Smart Label”: they are labels with 13.56 MHz embedded ultra-thin RFID tags (often called inlays or inlets). But of course the ID-1(credit card) format is the dominant form factor used for payment. This is also the most efficient format: The antenna size used in ID-1 cards ensures a better range than other formats. It also can carry multiple standardized interfaces (dual interface chip for both contact and contactless interfaces, magnetic stripes, barcode, and photography) and greatly enables migration from existing applications by offering backward interoperability with legacy systems. They are fast and simple to operate, rugged and flexible, and can be integrated into another device (such as a vending machine, access gate, hand-held terminal, etc). Our reader/writer functions with the widest range of contactless smart cards and protocols. They operate by proximity to the card and cause no friction, prolonging the life of the smart card. They have no moving parts, thereby, considerably reducing maintenance and cost of ownership. The contactless functionality means that cards can be presented to the reader/writer in any direction, significantly speeding the transaction and the overall response time. Cards can even stay in the wallet! Tandis contactless smart card reader/writers are state-of the-art and can be used for a board range of commercial and government applications, such as: E-Government: a catalyst for contactless smart cards Transport: first significant application for contactless smart cards Access Control: A very large number of applications Banking: the largest contactless opportunity to come Multi-Application / Loyalty: the “Squaring of the Circle” General Specifications: Read/Write Distance: Reading Range Up to 90mm Communication Speed: Up to 106 kbps Operating Frequency: 13.56 MHz Temperature Range: Operating temp: -20C to 85C Dimensions: According to specifications Power Supply: According to specifications Supported Chips: According to specifications Interface: According to specifications Private label Standard Compliancy: CE, FCC Privacy Policy Terms Of Use Home About Us Solutions Partners News Contact Us Copyright 2005/ Tandis Incrporated",17);arrFiles[26]=new Array(27,"rfid.htm","2005-03-16","RFID Technologies","","","Subscribe To Our Newsletter Contactless Standards Card Formats Assembly Lines Reader/Writers Applications Patents RFID TECHNOLOGIES Tandis is specialized in developing contactless smart cards equipments. Non-contact or contactless smart cards are the high-end of RFID technologies: They include writeable memory or microcontroller processing capability and their chip communicates with the card reader through wireless self-powered induction technology (106-424kbits/s). The contactless smart cards are replacing the old contact smart cards that connect to the reading device through direct physical contact between the chip and the reader. With contactless smart cards, in the other hand, the chip communicates with the reader using RF and does not require physical contact with the card reader. The contactless smart cards have numerous advantages over contact smart cards: They are temper resistant, easier to use, and even more secure. The standards for the contactless protocol for smart cards are ISO/IEC 14443 (type A and B) from the year 2001. There have been proposals for ISO 14443 type C, D, E and F that have yet to be accepted by the ISO standards committee. An alternative standard for contactless smartcard is ISO 15693. Tandis also offers solution for dual-interface cards that implement both contactless and contact interfaces on a single card with some shared storage and processing. There are six main applications for contactless smart cards: E-Government: a catalyst for contactless smart cards Transport: first significant application for contactless smart cards Access Control: A very large number of applications Banking: the largest contactless opportunity to come Multi-Application / Loyalty: the “Squaring of the Circle” Additional Information about contactless smart cards: Contactless Smart Cart Standards Contactless Smart Cart Formats Tandis is a one–stop-shop and your program management partner.
